Maxwell is a pioneering American singer-songwriter who helped define the neo-soul movement of the mid-1990s alongside artists like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu. Born Gerald Maxwell Rivera in Brooklyn, New York, to a Puerto Rican mother and a Haitian father, he taught himself to play keyboards and began writing songs as a teenager after the death of his father. His self-taught musical education and eclectic influences — ranging from R&B and soul to new wave and classic rock — gave him a distinctive artistic voice that would help reshape contemporary R&B.

Maxwell’s debut album, “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite” (1996), is widely regarded as a landmark album in the neo-soul genre. The album’s sophisticated blend of classic soul, jazz, and modern R&B, combined with Maxwell’s sensual falsetto vocals and poetic lyrics, earned critical acclaim and eventually went platinum. The single “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” became a top-40 hit and introduced his lush, romantic sound to a wide audience. His follow-up albums, “Embrya” (1998) and “Now” (2001), continued to showcase his artistic ambition, with “Now” debuting at number one on the Billboard 200.

After the release of “Now,” Maxwell took an extended hiatus from the music industry, retreating from public life for nearly eight years. His return in 2009 with “BLACKsummers’night” was one of the most anticipated comebacks in modern music history. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. The lead single, “Pretty Wings,” became one of the biggest R&B hits of the year and is considered one of his signature songs. The album was the first installment of a planned trilogy.

The trilogy continued with “blackSUMMERS’night” in 2016 and concluded with “blacksummers’NIGHT” in 2022, completing a creative arc that spanned over a decade. Maxwell’s meticulous approach to recording and his willingness to take extended breaks between albums have given his discography a quality-over-quantity reputation. His live performances are renowned for their energy and emotional intensity, making him a top concert draw.
