Jimmy Barnes

Jimmy Barnes is one of Australia’s most iconic and enduring rock musicians, with a career spanning over five decades. Born James Dixon Swan in Glasgow, Scotland, he emigrated to Australia with his family at the age of five, settling in Adelaide, South Australia. Growing up in the working-class suburb of Elizabeth, he faced a difficult childhood that would later fuel much of his raw, powerful musical expression.

Barnes first rose to fame as the lead vocalist of Cold Chisel, one of the most beloved rock bands in Australian history. Joining the band in 1973 at just 16 years old, he helped forge their signature blend of hard rock, pub rock, and blue-collar storytelling. Cold Chisel released classic albums including “East” (1980) and “Circus Animals” (1982) before disbanding in 1983. The band’s reunion tours over the years have been among the highest-grossing concert events in Australian history.

As a solo artist, Barnes has achieved extraordinary success, releasing more than 18 studio albums. He holds the record for the most number-one albums on the Australian ARIA Charts by any artist, with hits spanning from the 1980s through the 2020s. Songs like “Working Class Man,” “Too Much Ain’t Enough Love,” and “Driving Wheels” have become anthems of Australian rock. His versatility has also seen him explore soul, R&B, and acoustic music throughout his career.

Beyond music, Barnes has built a significant income through book sales, with his memoirs “Working Class Boy” (2016) and “Working Class Man” (2017) both becoming bestsellers. The first memoir was adapted into a documentary film. He has also appeared on numerous television programs and has been an advocate for various charitable causes. In 2017, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his contributions to music and the community.
