Jason Isbell

Jason Isbell is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist widely regarded as one of the finest songwriters of his generation. Born on February 1, 1979, in Green Hill, Alabama, he grew up in the Muscle Shoals area, a region famous for its rich musical heritage. He learned to play guitar and mandolin at an early age and began performing in local bands as a teenager.

Isbell joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001, contributing guitar work and songwriting to three of the band’s albums, including the critically acclaimed “Decoration Day” (2003) and “The Dirty South” (2004). His song “Outfit” from “Decoration Day” is considered one of the finest songs in the band’s catalog. He departed the group in 2007 and launched his solo career, initially releasing albums that received critical praise but modest commercial success.

His career reached a turning point with the 2013 album “Southeastern,” recorded after he achieved sobriety. The album was universally acclaimed and is often cited as one of the best albums of the 2010s. Isbell performs with his backing band the 400 Unit and has become one of the top touring acts in Americana and roots music.
