Akon, born Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American-Senegalese singer, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur who has become one of the most successful and versatile figures in the music industry. He spent much of his childhood moving between the United States and Senegal, exposing him to both African and American musical traditions. After settling in New Jersey as a teenager, he began pursuing music, blending R&B, hip-hop, and African musical influences into a distinctive sound.
