Vicente Fernandez

Vicente Fernandez, widely known as “El Rey de la Musica Ranchera” (The King of Ranchera Music), was one of the most beloved and iconic figures in Mexican music history. Born on February 17, 1940, in Huentitan El Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, he grew up in humble circumstances and began performing at local restaurants and events as a teenager. His powerful tenor voice and commanding stage presence would eventually make him the defining voice of ranchera music for over five decades, selling more than 65 million records worldwide.

Fernandez’s career spanned an extraordinary range of achievements. He recorded over 100 albums and starred in more than 30 films, becoming a major box office draw in Mexican cinema. His signature songs include “Volver Volver,” “El Rey,” “Hermoso Cariño,” and “Por Tu Maldito Amor,” which became anthems of Mexican culture and identity. He won three Grammy Awards, nine Latin Grammy Awards, and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998. His concerts were legendary events, often filling stadiums with tens of thousands of fans.

Beyond music and film, Fernandez was a shrewd businessman who invested heavily in real estate, including his famous ranch, Rancho Los 3 Potrillos, in Guadalajara. The estate became a symbol of his success and a tourist attraction in its own right. He also founded the musical dynasty that includes his sons Alejandro Fernandez and Vicente Fernandez Jr., as well as his granddaughter Angela Aguilar through his daughter’s marriage into the Aguilar family, ensuring his musical legacy continues through future generations.

Fernandez passed away on December 12, 2021, at the age of 81, following complications from a fall at his ranch. His death prompted an outpouring of grief across Mexico and Latin America, with the Mexican government declaring a period of national mourning. His estate, estimated at $25 million in 2026, continues to generate income through music royalties, streaming revenue, and his extensive real estate holdings.
