Dolly Rebecca Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, rose from extreme poverty in the Smoky Mountains to become one of the most beloved and successful entertainers in American history. The fourth of twelve children in a one-room cabin, Parton began performing as a child, appearing on local radio and television by age ten. She moved to Nashville the day after her high school graduation in 1964 and quickly found success as a songwriter, penning hits for other artists before launching her own recording career.

Parton’s songwriting catalog is one of the most valuable in music history, with over 3,000 songs to her credit and ownership of the publishing rights to nearly all of them.
