Jay Park

Jay Park, born Park Jae-beom on April 25, 1987, in Edmonds, Washington, is a Korean-American singer, rapper, dancer, and entrepreneur who has built one of the most diverse careers in Asian entertainment. Raised in the Seattle area, he developed a passion for b-boying (breakdancing) as a teenager and auditioned for JYP Entertainment in South Korea. He debuted in 2008 as the leader of the K-pop boy band 2PM, quickly becoming one of the group’s most popular members. However, in 2009, controversial MySpace comments he had made years earlier surfaced, leading to massive public backlash in South Korea and his departure from the group.

Rather than letting the scandal end his career, Jay Park staged one of the most impressive comebacks in K-pop history. He returned to the United States briefly before coming back to South Korea as a solo artist. His 2010 cover of B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” went viral and proved he could stand on his own. He subsequently signed with SidusHQ and released his debut solo album “New Breed” in 2012, which showcased his abilities as a rapper, singer, and dancer. His music blended K-pop, hip-hop, R&B, and pop in a way that appealed to both Korean and international audiences.

Jay Park founded two record labels that became major forces in the Korean music industry. AOMG (Above Ordinary Music Group), founded in 2013, and H1GHR Music, co-founded with Cha Cha Malone in 2017, have been home to some of Korea’s biggest hip-hop and R&B acts, including Simon Dominic, Gray, Loco, and pH-1. Through these labels, Park established himself not just as an artist but as an influential music executive who helped shape the Korean hip-hop and R&B landscape. In 2022, he sold his stake in AOMG to CJ ENM while retaining control of H1GHR Music.

Beyond music, Jay Park has been involved in numerous ventures. He served as a judge on the Korean hip-hop competition shows “Show Me the Money” and has been a cultural bridge between American and Korean music scenes. He has collaborated with major American artists and has been credited with helping bring Korean hip-hop to international attention. He is also known for his extensive tattoo collection and his continued involvement in b-boy culture.
