Ziwe Fumudoh

Ziwe Fumudoh, known mononymously as Ziwe, is an American comedian, writer, and television host who gained prominence through her incisive and often uncomfortable interview style that confronts issues of race, identity, and pop culture. Born to Nigerian immigrant parents and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Fumudoh studied at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Her early career included writing for popular shows including Desus and Mero on Showtime and The Rundown with Robin Thede on BET.

Fumudoh’s breakout moment came during the social upheaval of 2020 when her Instagram Live show, Baited with Ziwe, went viral. On the show, she would invite guests, often white public figures, and ask them pointed, deliberately uncomfortable questions about race. The show’s format, which blended comedy with genuine interrogation of racial dynamics, resonated with audiences during the Black Lives Matter protests and broader cultural reckoning on race. Episodes featuring guests like Caroline Calloway and Alison Roman generated millions of views and widespread media coverage.

The success of Baited led to Fumudoh landing her own late-night variety show, Ziwe, on Showtime in 2021. The show featured her signature interview segments alongside musical performances, sketches, and celebrity guests. It was praised for its bold approach to comedy and social commentary, and Fumudoh was recognized as one of the most innovative new voices in American comedy. Though the show ran for two seasons before ending in 2023, it established Fumudoh as a significant cultural commentator.

Beyond television, Fumudoh has expanded into fashion and pop culture, attending major events like the Met Gala and collaborating with fashion brands. She has written for various publications and continues to create content across social media platforms.
