Sting, born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, is one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful musicians of the modern era. Born in Wallsend, Northumberland, England, he earned the nickname “Sting” from a fellow musician who noted his habit of wearing a black and yellow striped sweater that made him look like a bee. He first achieved worldwide fame as the lead singer, songwriter, and bassist of The Police, one of the defining bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
