Michelle Zauner

Michelle Zauner is an American singer, songwriter, and author best known as the frontwoman of the indie rock band Japanese Breakfast. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Eugene, Oregon, Zauner grew up navigating her Korean-American identity, a theme that would become central to her creative work. She began making music in Philadelphia’s DIY scene, initially with the emo band Little Big League before launching Japanese Breakfast as a solo project in 2013.

Japanese Breakfast gained significant attention with the album Psychopomp (2016), written in the aftermath of her mother’s death from cancer. The album’s blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and indie rock resonated deeply with listeners. Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017) further expanded the project’s sonic palette with synth-driven arrangements and science fiction themes.
