Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel is a British actress, writer, and producer who has established herself as one of the most original and daring creative voices in contemporary television. Born Michaela Ewuraba Boakye-Collinson in London to Ghanaian parents, she grew up on a council estate in Tower Hamlets. She attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was one of only a handful of Black students, and graduated with a first-class degree.

Coel first gained widespread attention with her Channel 4 comedy series Chewing Gum, which she created, wrote, and starred in. The show, based on her one-woman play Chewing Gum Dreams, earned her two BAFTA Awards for Best Female Comedy Performance. The series was praised for its fresh, irreverent humor and authentic portrayal of a young woman navigating life in east London.

Her crowning achievement came with I May Destroy You, the 2020 HBO/BBC series that she created, co-directed, wrote, produced, and starred in. The show, which explored themes of sexual assault and consent, was hailed as one of the greatest television series ever made. It earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series and was named the best TV show of 2020 by numerous publications. Notably, Coel turned down a reported one million dollar deal from Netflix to retain creative control of the project.

Coel has since expanded into major film work, joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Aneka. She was named in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list and has been recognized with a British Book Award for her memoir Misfits. Her commitment to artistic integrity and willingness to prioritize creative vision over financial gain has made her an inspiring figure in the entertainment industry.
