Born Martha Helen Kostyra on August 3, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, she grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, in a working-class Polish-American family. She began modeling as a teenager and worked her way through Barnard College, where she graduated with a double major in history and architectural history. After a brief career as a stockbroker on Wall Street, she pivoted to catering and eventually launched a publishing and media empire.

Stewart’s rise to fame began with her 1982 book Entertaining, which became a bestseller and established her as America’s premier authority on cooking, home decorating, and gracious living. She launched Martha Stewart Living magazine in 1990, followed by her television show of the same name in 1993. In 1997, she consolidated her various business ventures into Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO), which she took public in 1999, briefly making her a billionaire. Stewart’s career faced its most significant challenge in 2004 when she was convicted of felony charges related to insider trading of ImClone Systems stock and served five months in federal prison. Rather than ending her career, the experience became a chapter in one of the greatest comebacks in American business history. She returned to television, launched new product lines, and rebuilt her brand with even greater determination. In 2015, Sequential Brands Group acquired Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia for approximately $353 million.

In recent years, Stewart has experienced a remarkable cultural renaissance. Her unexpected friendship and partnership with Snoop Dogg, resulting in their VH1 show Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, introduced her to new audiences. In 2023, at age 81, she became the oldest model to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, breaking barriers and challenging ageism.
