Mario Dewar Barrett, known mononymously as Mario, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, actor, and dancer who rose to fame as a teenager and became one of the most recognizable voices in early 2000s R&B. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Mario grew up in challenging circumstances, with his mother struggling with heroin addiction, an experience that profoundly shaped his artistry. He began singing at age four and won a talent show at age 11, which led to him being discovered by producer Troy Patterson and eventually signing with J Records at just 15 years old.

Mario’s self-titled debut album was released in 2002 when he was only 15, featuring the hit single “Just a Friend 2002,” a reworking of Biz Markie’s classic that reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Mario transitioned into acting with roles in the dance film “Step Up” (2006) alongside Channing Tatum, and later appeared in “Freedom Writers” (2007).
