Kate Bush

Kate Bush is one of the most influential and innovative artists in popular music history. Born in Bexleyheath, Kent, England, she demonstrated extraordinary musical talent from a young age, learning piano and writing songs as a teenager. She was discovered by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour at age 16, who helped fund her first professional demo recordings. In 1978, at just 19 years old, she became the first woman to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart with a self-written song when “Wuthering Heights” topped the charts.

Bush’s career spans over four decades and includes ten studio albums, each pushing the boundaries of pop, art rock, and experimental music. Albums like “The Kick Inside” (1978), “Hounds of Love” (1985), and “The Sensual World” (1989) are regarded as masterpieces. She was a pioneer in the use of synthesizers, sampling, and music video as an art form. Her meticulous approach to production, often spending years crafting each album, resulted in a relatively small but exceptionally high-quality body of work.

In 2022, Bush experienced a massive cultural resurgence when her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill” was featured prominently in the Netflix series Stranger Things. The song reached number one in multiple countries, introducing her music to an entirely new generation and generating an enormous spike in streaming revenue and royalties. The song’s revival alone reportedly earned her tens of millions of dollars and significantly boosted her overall catalog value.

Bush’s wealth is primarily derived from her extensive songwriting royalties, as she wrote virtually all of her own material, and from the ownership of her master recordings. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2013.
