Stormzy

Stormzy, born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. on July 26, 1993, in Croydon, South London, is one of the most influential grime and hip-hop artists to emerge from the United Kingdom. Raised by his Ghanaian mother in a council estate, he began freestyling as a teenager and uploaded tracks to YouTube that quickly gained traction. His 2014 freestyle series “Wicked Skengman” went viral and established him as a formidable force in the UK grime scene. By 2015, he had won a MOBO Award for Best Grime Act, solidifying his place among the genre’s elite before even releasing a debut album.

His first studio album, “Gang Signs & Prayer,” dropped in 2017 and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, making it the first grime album to achieve that feat. The project earned him two BRIT Awards, including British Male Solo Artist and British Album of the Year. His headlining performance at Glastonbury Festival in 2019 was a cultural landmark, making him the first Black British solo artist to headline the Pyramid Stage. His second album, “Heavy Is the Head” (2019), featured the hit “Vossi Bop,” which became his first UK number-one single.

Beyond music, Stormzy has built a significant business empire. He founded the record label #Merky Records in partnership with Atlantic Records and launched #Merky Books, a publishing imprint with Penguin Random House dedicated to underrepresented voices. He established the Stormzy Scholarship at the University of Cambridge, funding tuition and living costs for Black students. His third album, “This Is What I Mean” (2022), showcased artistic maturity and received critical acclaim.

Stormzy’s wealth stems from album sales, massive touring revenue across Europe and beyond, brand endorsements with companies like Adidas, and his various business ventures.
