Actor, Comedian, Improviser | American
Neil Flynn is an American actor and comedian best known for his role as the eccentric and mysterious Janitor in “Scrubs” (2001-2010), a character he largely improvised and helped create. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a member of The Second City improv troupe, which honed his exceptional improvisational skills.
The Janitor character on “Scrubs” was originally planned as a figment of J.D.’s imagination for the first season, but Flynn’s performance was so popular that the character was made real and expanded. Flynn improvised many of his lines, with the writers often leaving his dialogue blank to see what he’d create.
After “Scrubs,” Flynn went on to star as Mike Heck, the loving but laconic father in the ABC sitcom “The Middle” (2009-2018), which ran for nine seasons. His background in improv comedy has made him a unique presence in both shows.
