Sarah McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan is one of Canada’s most beloved and commercially successful musicians, known for her ethereal soprano voice, deeply emotional songwriting, and pioneering role in promoting female artists. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she studied classical guitar, piano, and voice at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She was discovered at age 17 by Nettwerk Records and released her debut album, “Touch,” in 1988. Her early albums, including “Solace” (1991) and “Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” (1993), built a devoted following and established her as a critical favorite in the alternative and adult contemporary genres.

McLachlan’s commercial breakthrough came with her 1997 album “Surfacing,” which sold over 11 million copies worldwide and produced her biggest hits, including “Building a Mystery,” “Adia,” and “Angel.” The album won two Grammy Awards and remains one of the defining albums of 1990s adult contemporary music. That same year, she founded and headlined the Lilith Fair music festival, an all-female touring concert that ran from 1997 to 1999. Lilith Fair was a cultural phenomenon, becoming the top-grossing touring festival of 1997 and proving that female artists could headline major events, challenging the male-dominated music industry.

Beyond her own recordings, McLachlan became widely recognized for her involvement in the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) television commercials, where her song “Angel” accompanied heartbreaking footage of animals in need. These commercials became some of the most effective charity advertisements ever produced, helping raise over $30 million for the organization. Her songs have also been featured in numerous films, television shows, and other media, generating substantial royalty income.

McLachlan founded the Sarah McLachlan School of Music in Vancouver in 2002, providing free music education to underserved youth. She was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017 and has received numerous Juno Awards throughout her career. While she records and tours less frequently than during her peak years, her catalog continues to generate significant income, and her status as a music icon ensures continued demand for live performances and licensing deals.
