Lil Kim, born Kimberly Denise Jones on July 11, 1975, in Brooklyn, New York, is a pioneering female rapper who helped redefine the role of women in hip-hop during the 1990s and 2000s. Raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, she had a turbulent childhood and was at times homeless as a teenager. Her life changed when she met The Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls), who became her mentor and romantic partner. Biggie helped her join the hip-hop group Junior M.A.F.I.A., whose 1995 debut album “Conspiracy” produced the hit singles “Player’s Anthem” and “Get Money.”

Lil Kim’s debut solo album “Hard Core” was released in 1996 and was a groundbreaking release for female rappers. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, eventually going double platinum, and featured the hits “No Time,” “Crush on You,” and “Not Tonight.” Her explicit lyrics and bold, fashion-forward image challenged gender norms in hip-hop and paved the way for future female rappers including Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.
