Sade Adu, known mononymously as Sade, is a British-Nigerian singer, songwriter, and the lead vocalist of the band that bears her name. Born Helen Folasade Adu on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria, she moved to England at age four after her parents separated. Growing up in Colchester, Essex, and later London, she studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins before gravitating toward music in the early 1980s as part of the London club scene.

Sade the band formed in 1982, and their debut album “Diamond Life” (1984) was a global phenomenon, selling over 10 million copies worldwide.
