Abby Lee Miller

Abby Lee Miller is an American dance instructor, choreographer, and reality television personality best known for starring in the hit Lifetime series “Dance Moms.” Born on September 21, 1965, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Miller grew up surrounded by dance. Her mother, Maryen Lorrain Miller, founded the Reign Dance Productions studio (later renamed Abby Lee Dance Company) in 1980, and young Abby began training there at an early age. She took over the studio and built it into one of the most successful competitive dance studios in the Pittsburgh area.

Miller rose to national fame when Lifetime debuted “Dance Moms” in July 2011. The reality series followed Miller as she coached young dancers at her studio while frequently clashing with their mothers. Her tough, no-nonsense teaching style and fiery personality made for compelling television, and the show became one of Lifetime’s highest-rated programs. The series helped launch the careers of several young dancers, most notably Maddie Ziegler, who went on to achieve fame through her collaborations with singer Sia. The show ran for eight seasons, with Miller appearing in the first seven.

Miller’s life took several difficult turns in the mid-2010s. In 2015, she was indicted on federal fraud charges for concealing income and assets during a bankruptcy proceeding. She pleaded guilty in 2016 and was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, beginning her sentence in July 2017. While incarcerated, she was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and underwent emergency spinal surgery in April 2018. The cancer treatment left her temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, and she has since used a wheelchair.

Despite these enormous challenges, Miller has shown remarkable resilience. She went into cancer remission and returned to Dance Moms for a brief period. She has continued to teach dance, make television appearances, and maintain a significant social media presence. Her net worth, once estimated to be higher before her legal troubles and medical expenses, stands at approximately $2 million as of 2026. Miller continues to be a polarizing but undeniably influential figure in the competitive dance world.
