Tori Amos

Tori Amos is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and composer who has been one of the most distinctive and influential voices in alternative and art rock for over three decades. Born Myra Ellen Amos on August 22, 1963, in Newton, North Carolina, she was a child prodigy who earned a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, making her one of the youngest students ever admitted. She later lost the scholarship at age eleven due to her interest in popular music over classical training.

After an unsuccessful stint with the hair metal band Y Kant Tori Read in the late 1980s, Amos reinvented herself as a solo artist with the release of “Little Earthquakes” in 1992. The album, featuring confessional and deeply personal songs performed primarily on piano, was a critical and commercial breakthrough that helped define the female singer-songwriter movement of the 1990s. She followed with “Under the Pink” (1994), which debuted at number one in the UK, and “Boys for Pele” (1996), further establishing her as a fearless and innovative artist unafraid to tackle taboo subjects including sexual assault, religion, and patriarchy.

Beyond music, she co-founded RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) in 1994, the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the United States.
