RuPaul Andre Charles is the most commercially successful drag queen in American history and a groundbreaking figure in entertainment and LGBTQ+ culture. Born on November 17, 1960, in San Diego, California, RuPaul moved to Atlanta, Georgia, as a teenager and became involved in the city’s vibrant music and performance scene. He spent years performing in clubs and working on independent film projects before relocating to New York City, where he became a fixture of the downtown nightclub scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

RuPaul’s big breakthrough came in 1993 with the release of his debut album Supermodel of the World, featuring the hit single ‘Supermodel (You Better Work).’ The song became a mainstream hit and made RuPaul a household name overnight. He became the first drag queen to land a major cosmetics contract when MAC Cosmetics signed him as a spokesperson, and he hosted The RuPaul Show on VH1 from 1996 to 1998, making him the first drag queen to host a nationally syndicated talk show.
