Shania Twain

Eilleen Regina Edwards, known worldwide as Shania Twain, was born on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and raised in Timmins, Ontario. She endured a difficult childhood marked by poverty and domestic abuse. After her mother and stepfather died in a car accident in 1987, she became the primary caregiver for her younger siblings at age 22. She took a job performing at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario, to support her family, all while nurturing her dream of a music career.

Twain’s self-titled debut album was released in 1993 and achieved modest success. Her career was transformed when she began working with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, whom she married in 1993. Their collaboration produced “The Woman in Me” (1995), which sold over 20 million copies worldwide and earned a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. But it was their next collaboration, “Come On Over” (1997), that made history. The album became the best-selling country album and best-selling album by a female artist of all time, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide. It produced massive crossover hits including “You’re Still the One,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” and “From This Moment On.”

Twain’s third album, “Up!” (2002), was also a major commercial success, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. However, her career was derailed in the mid-2000s by a devastating personal crisis when her husband Mutt Lange had an affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiebaud, leading to their divorce in 2010. Twain also developed dysphonia, a condition that affected her singing voice due to nerve damage from Lyme disease. She underwent open-throat surgery and extensive vocal rehabilitation before making her comeback.

Twain’s comeback has been remarkable. She launched a highly successful Las Vegas residency, “Still the One,” which ran from 2012 to 2014 at Caesars Palace and grossed over $78 million. A second residency, “Let’s Go!,” followed at Zappos Theater from 2019 to 2020. Her comeback album “Now” (2017) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. She launched the Queen of Me Tour in 2023 in support of her album of the same name, performing to sold-out arenas worldwide. Her total record sales exceed 100 million, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history.
