Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz, is an American DJ, record producer, and songwriter who has become one of the most influential figures in electronic and dance music. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and raised in various cities across the southern United States, Diplo studied film at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he began DJing at local parties. His early work blending hip-hop, electronic, and global music styles set him apart from his contemporaries.

Diplo first gained widespread attention with his work on M.I.A.’s debut album Arular in 2004, followed by the critically acclaimed mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism. He founded the record label Mad Decent and the non-profit organization Heaps Decent, which works with underprivileged youth in music education.
