Lil Durk, born Durk Derrick Banks on October 19, 1992, in Chicago, Illinois, has risen from one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods to become a leading figure in hip-hop. Growing up in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Durk was deeply affected by the violence and poverty surrounding him. His father, Dontay Banks Sr., was incarcerated when Durk was young, leaving the family in difficult circumstances. He began pursuing music as a teenager, releasing tracks on social media that documented the harsh realities of his environment.

Durk gained attention in the early 2010s as part of the Chicago drill music scene alongside Chief Keef, Lil Reese, and others. He has lost numerous friends and family members to gun violence, including his brother DThang who was killed in 2021 and his close friend King Von who was fatally shot in 2020. In 2022, he and his girlfriend India Royale survived a home invasion shooting. Despite these challenges, Durk has continued to create music and build his OTF label into a successful enterprise.
