Penelope Cruz, born Penelope Cruz Sanchez on April 28, 1974, in Alcobendas, Madrid, Spain, is an Academy Award-winning actress who has become one of the most celebrated Spanish performers in Hollywood history. Raised in a working-class family, Cruz studied classical ballet at Spain’s National Conservatory for nine years and began acting as a teenager. She made her film debut at 16 in the Spanish film “El laberinto griego” and quickly became a star in Spanish cinema through her collaborations with director Pedro Almodovar.
